Hey All,

First I want to say thanks for those have have helped this northerner with guidance and advice as I plan my trip for April.

Our encounters in and around New England are different than what I've been researching and reading on this site. We have little to no encounters with dolphins. We may occassionally see a seal, which is a signal that the area is not likely to be productive. And as for shark encounters... I've not had one yet, it's not something I ever want to experience ("...we're going to need a bigger boat!...). I know I paddle with them, but just haven't had to contend with one.

What's the encounters in SWFL like? Is there a chance I may hook a dolphin? I know they like to steal the catch. Is that after a release or while the fils is still on the line? What would you do... cut the line?

And as for sharks, I know I'll cut the line, but again, what's the reality of hooking one?

Thanks,

Jeff

Not sure about offshore, but if you fish inshore here, little chance of a dolphin will steal your catch. Sharks are in the shallows, but I never cast to them, as chances are I will lose my lure, which are too expensive.

Done a lot of fishing inshore from a yak and never had a dolphin take a hooked fish nor have I had a shark encounter, although I have seen a lot of both! Not to worry!

Fishing SWFl inshore waters, you are likely to encounter dolphin and small (3 foot) sharks. From my experience, dolphin will not take your lure or hooked fish; however, they may hang around your yak for a free meal if you are catching and releasing. Should you hook a small shark, they are fun but you will most likely have to cut the line should you be able to get it close to your yak. You don't want to bring even a small shark on board to remove the hook.
