I use a 6# downrigger ball weight and it works most of the time specially if the bottom is soft... been usin it for many years on 2 or 3 different kayaks, 3 canoes, and a paddleboard... most days I find it to be overkill and everytime I walk by a 4# one I pick it up, look at it and say this would work just as well, then look at the $15.00 price and say ya know that 6# ball works just fine.
Most days I'll grab my stakeout pole instead of the anchor unless I know I'll be in water deeper than 4-6' or places like Choko with hard and/or oyster bottom.
