The only recent fishing reports for the north half of Pine Island I have are:

- Plenty of large mullet (I love mullet).

- Large sharks at the north end of Pine Island and on the flats out of the Pineland launch - use your best judgment if fishing for them.

Side note: In case some of you aren't aware, you can rent the Bokeelia fishing pier any night but Thursday for $100. You get to fish from 7 p.m. to midnight. I think you can bring as many people as you want to split costs. Thursday night is Shark Night, same hours. They chum the water and fish for sharks. I think it's either $8 or $10. They've hooked some large sharks this summer. Talk to the dockmaster for more details. I think I have this info correct, but I'll update if a correction is needed.

Just passing that along.

Updated fishing report: My neighbor said reds are going off big time right now, especially up near Indian Field. These are large reds, schooled up. He said he hasn't caught one under 29".
The down side: He said the bite seems to be an end of the day thing, just before sunset (he has a flats boat, not a kayak). So, that's a long paddle from my place and it would mean returning in the dark. I'm not really comfortable with that, but I guess some people don't mind paddling in the dark.

The water is still pretty murky along the east side of Pine Island where I live, but the good news is that the big snook are in my area. I'm basing that on my neighbor's fishing report. Yesterday and today he landed three snook between 38 and 41 inches and a few smaller ones that he said were slot-size but he didn't measure them. He's catching them on artificials, mostly jigs. They've been fishing just past the oyster bars that are about at the northern tip of Little Pine Island, working from the oyster bars to the mangroves along Pine Island.

He also said the dolphins are hunting in packs in the same area, but seem to be targeting reds, which apparently are in in decent numbers (but he didn't report catching any reds).

So, if anyone wants to launch from here this weekend, let me know.

I'm leaving for the winter next weekend. Doing the "reverse snowbird" thing once again, heading north instead of south, leaving warm weather for cold weather. I'll be wearing a dry suit while kayaking the Intracoastal Waterway, the back bays, the creeks and the marshes of southern New Jersey. Good luck to all of you this winter.

EJ: Thanks for your timely reports over the summer as well as the open invitation to use your launch. Have a good winter in Jersey. Where abouts? I was originally from Plainfield but spent a goodly amount of time from Asbury down to Seaside.
