Hello,

I'm counting the days until I become a snowbird (FL/MI) on March 8th 2019.

I'm an experienced freshwater lake and river kayak pescador but have not fished on salt.

I'm looking for general safety advice from you all.

Here are some specific questions.

Gear. I have the usual safety gear for freshwater. PDF, paddle leash, whistle, knife, orange flag.

How many of you carry VHF radios? Flare guns? Any thing else a bit unusual?

Places I plan to fish to start out with;
Peace River by Harbour heights. Port Charlotte beach launch. Ponce de Leon park. A couple of other places on Fishing Franks.
Near Bayshore fishing pier. This will be in the harbor proper but no more than a couple hundred yards off shore.

At first I'll be fishing alone. Is that even a good idea?

Thanks,

Mike

You should be fine with what you have. I don't bring more than what is required. Most of water we fish here is less than 6' as well. Just pick a side of the harbor that is protected from the wind and that should protect you from any big waves and such.
