Quite a few dead fish along the shoreline of Charlotte Harbor at the north end of Pine Island yesterday. Same thing in Jug Creek. Right now it appears that the fish kill is primarily non-game fish: mostly catfish and pin fish, but I saw one dead sheepshead yesterday. The other day the smell of rotting fish was pretty strong, but I didn't bother to go check out the dead fish situation.
DEP's volunteer water quality monitoring team will be sampling waters throughout the Charlotte Harbor estuary region from Boca Grande to Estero next Monday, and data should be available in mid-December. Last month's sampling indicated that red tide is increasing, and at that time there were no fish kills of note in Charlotte Harbor. Hopefully this isn't going to be another year of increased fish and marine mammal mortality.

Wednesday’s sampling report actually show that things are improving in the region. The red tide seems to be very spotty as it has only recently showed up in the Charlotte Harbor area around Jug Creek. I have been down on Captiva and the bite around Redfish Pass has been great with some minor signs of red tide. However, just a little ways south in Blind Pass area, many floating fish including a few trout, snook and redfish. No signs of any fish on the Buck Key flats. Let’s hope the report I read is correct and things are getting better! Maybe cooler water temps will help!
